Infineon to blame for iPhone 3G speed problems?

While most iPhone 3G users are having a great time and enjoying the heck out of the device, some are frustrated with its 3G data performance and poor reception.

The culprit?

According to Nomura Securities analyst Richard Windsor “these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack.”

Windsor believes that the supplier of the the 3G chipset used by the iPhone 3G is Infineon and also believes that the problem isn’t one that can be addressed by a firmware update.

If you’re an iPhone 3G owner and have noticed a big slowdown when surfing the web, check to see if you have a 3G or EDGE connection–you’ve probably dropped to EDGE and that’s the reason for the change in speed.

Wi-Fi > 3G > EDGE > writing the pages by hand on the fly (but just barely)

That’s an exaggeration, of course, but you get the idea. An updated protocol stack might make some difference but if the problem really is with the chipset and radio the hardware would need to be replaced to make a meaningful difference.
