All NVIDIA G84 and G86 parts defective?
You might remember back on July 3rd NVIDIA informed investors that “significant quantities” of some of their older GPUs but as the story ages it seems to get a little be worse.
Now it seems that all NVIDIA G84 and G86 parts are bad. Laptops, desktops, mobile devices–you name it, they’re bad.
The problem seems to be heat related ad the parts can’t take the heating and cooling of switching devices off and on again.
That BIOS update that HP issued for their affected computers? It just switched the GPU cooling fan and kept it on, so it doesn’t really fix things but if it keeps the computer from dying its better than nothing.
According to The Inquirer PC makers were kept in the dark about this defect but NVIDIA knew all about it, saying that they missed their engineering goals and overclocked their parts by bumping the voltage which would explain the little overheating problem.
Nice job, NVIDIA.
