Pioneer develops higher capacity Blu-ray discs, can hold 400GB
Current Blu-ray discs are good choices for backing up large amounts of data (if you can afford them) but while the capacity of 50GB on a dual-layer disc sounds like a huge amount it can go pretty quickly depending on what type of data you’re trying to backup.
To help people who agree that 50GB is a bit small for their needs, Pioneer has announced a new 16-layer disc. The per layer capacity of the new discs is the same as the current discs (25GB per layer), but Pioneer has found a way to squeeze 16-layers into one disc, making the total capacity 400GB.
No pricing or release info yet…might be a ways off still at this point but look for more details to emerge at the International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008 opening on July 13th.
