Google working on ‘Gphone’?

gphone For about a year now there has been a rumor that Google was working on their own cellphone handset and the phone quickly became referred to as the “Google phone”, or “Gphone”.

When Google announced the Open Handset Alliance on November 5th, 2007, the rumors quieted down as Google announced that they weren’t working on one phone, they were working on software that could be used by many phones from different manufacturers so in effect there would be many “Google phones”, they just wouldn’t be made by Google.

The rumor is making the rounds again, saying that a “source familiar with the situation” says that large teams are working on the Android platform as well as Google’s own “Gphone” hardware.

They are also saying that the hardware is suffering from a delay.

Assuming that Google is working on their own handset and plan to bring it to market, I wonder what would be unique about their handset that wouldn’t be in, say, an HTC handset that would be running Google’s Android software?
