Apple buys microprocessor design company PA Semi
In a somewhat surprising move, Apple has announced that it s buying small microprocessor design company PA Semi.
Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said that Apple “buys smaller technology companies from time to time” but didn’t comment on what Apple plans to do with them.
Forbes is reporting that the deal was for $278 in cash.
PA Semi was founded in 2003 by Dan Dobberpuhl and current employees 150 people. Super-geeks may recognize Dobberpuhl as the former lead designer on DEC’s Alpha and StrongARM chips.
Perhaps Apple has plans to use chips designed by PA Semi instead of Intel’s upcoming Atom chip in smaller devices? Stay tuned…
