Samsung expects to release affordable OLED TVs beginning in 2009
No question that OLED TV’s have gorgeous image quality, but its currently too expensive for most to even consider getting.
For example, Sony’s 11-inch XEL-1 OLED TV will set you back $2,500.
Samsung SDI’s vice president of marketing Woo-Jong Lee says that medium and large sized OLED displays are coming beginning in 2009, with Samsung expecting to double their current production capacity to 3 million OLED panels in 2009 and double it again to nearly 6 million in 2010.
Increasing the production efficiency should mean cheaper pricing for consumers.
I wouldn’t expect them to get to LCD or plasma-like pricing for a few more years still, but it’s a great step that I’ll sure be watching.
