The ISO has voted to officially make the file format of Microsoft’s latest version of Office an official standard.

Over the next six months a group will draw up a plan on how to best maintain the OOXML (Office Open XML) format.

Google argues that OOXML “doesn’t meet the criteria required for a globally-accepted standard,” but is is anyway and now the working group and ISO will do what they can to make sure the format is globally accepted.

You can check out the ISO/IEC resolution here or Alex Brown’s breakdown of the resolution here.
