PS3 firmware v2.30 coming soon, DTS-HD MA support, updated PlayStation Store

new_playstation_storeSony has announced that a new firmware is coming soon for their PlayStation 3 console that will enable two new things:

  • DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio output
  • Updated PlayStation Store

Audiophiles will no doubt be pleased to hear about the new audio output support.

DTS-HD MA is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master recording, giving you the ability to access 24.5Mb/second of audio data from a Blu-ray movie. If you have an audio system that can support it you’ll be treated to 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24 bit depths.

DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is similar but consumes less space on the disc.

For more info about DTS audio formats check out this page.

No word on exactly when the new firmware will hit but in the video Grace Chen says that it will be coming in mid-April.
