Lite-On developing Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360?

DigiTimes is reporting that according to industry sources Lite-On is developing a Blu-ray drive for Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

The drives, according to the sources, will begin shipping to Microsoft in the second half of this year.

Is it true? Aaron Greenberg (group product manager for the Xbox 360) says no, Stan Glasgow (US president, Sony Electronics) says yes. I say maybe.

Some view Blu-ray as a stop-gap technology between DVD and downloadable HD content, but considering the penetration that Blu-ray already has if Microsoft sees its adoption continue to rise there’s no reason why they shouldn’t at the very least strongly consider adding a new SKU with a built-in Blu-ray drive and maybe an add-on drive for existing owners.

Downloadable content is great and I use it all the time, but there’s still a place for physical media in the market just like there’s still a place for paper in the workplace.

The paperless office and disc-free entertainment center sound great in theory, but in some ways it’s just not very practical…at last not yet.
