New technology could “print” LCDs
New research that will be published later this week in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science describes how the use of a customized inkjet printer could “print” wires composed of silver nanoparticles.
This new technology has the potential add speed and flexibility to TFT (thin-film transistors) manufacturing, but so far has met with limited success.
The report describes the use of a custom inkjet nozzle that is capable of depositing femtoliter-sized droplets that are 1000-times smaller than droplets produced by standard inkjet nozzles. The “ink” contains silver nanoparticles which could deposit dots as small as 1µm. Heading them to 130°C for one-hour causes the drops to coalesce into conducting wires.
