Nikon officially announces D60 consumer-level DSLR camera [UPDATED]

After some speculation and a leak or two, Nikon has finally announced the D60 DSLR camera–that’s it pictured on the left.

Something old, something new.

It’s very similar to the 10.2 megapixel Nikon D40x with a few new features thrown in, like a new image-stabilizing kit lens, auto-orienting screen (horizontal or vertical), built-in stop-motion moviemaker, and two systems to battle dust on the sensor–one to shake dust off the sensor and another to channel dust away from the sensor.

The body is the same as the one use by the D40x and most of their specifications are the same.

As DP Review points out in their brief hands-on, a lot of the other differences are on the marketing side.

If you were hoping for LiveView like the new Canon EOS Rebel XSi 450D you won’t find it here.

UPDATE: Pricing and availability information has come out–look for the Nikon D60 in February with an 18-55mm VR lens for $749.95.
